A pair of etching, both signed Polidorus Caravagiensis Inventor
|Condition:||Overall in good condition|
|Title of artwork:||The Etruscans arriving in Rome in battle ships|
|Artist:||Polidoro da Caravaggio (1500 - 1536)|
Each 14 x 43,50 cm.
As a pair in one acid free passe-partout measuring 40 x 54 cm.
These are good dark early impressions cut on the image borderline.
Some age toning and surface spots. With several cracks and tears pasted on laid paper album sheets.
These etchings show the frieze 'The arrival of the Etruscans in Latium' frescoed by Polidoro da Caravaggio (1500-1536) which once decorated the Palazzo Gaddi in Rome. These are known by the print series by Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635 - 1700) but here we have another, probably earlier version. The print was published by Jean Leblond ( c.1590 - 1666) as his name is beneaththe bottom print in the covered text line.
These etchings are in mirror view to the Santi Bartoli prints. They are in the same direction and very near to theversion by Michele Grechi Lucchese (1534 - 1564)
Together a very attractive framed pair.
