All our exclusive Art may be viewed or picked up in David Norden's Buy African Antiques Shop in Antwerp, by appointment.
Stopper Makonde, Mozambique end 19th Century, early XXth. Previous Collection: Gaetan Schoonbroodt, Verviers. With its arch-typical Makonde face this stopper was carved by a master. The scarification on the face have deeper meaning than just decoration they are clan related. What makes this example special is the asymmetrical coiffure on top of the head. This is rare and most of all exhibits the inventiveness of the carver. The geometric patterns on the base is well done. An early collected example; in excellent condition.
