Around 1900 - 1920 - Nice condition

Exterior curvature: 69 cm.
Interior curvature: 68 cm.
Circumference of the base: 15,5 cm.
Weight: 1,521 kilograms.

This ivory tusk was finely carved on all its length and represents scenes of the tribal everyday life.
Wonderful, very neat and light patina.
The pictures were taken under several brightnesses, including natural daylight in order to present the most exact possible the colours and the patina.

It comes from the former Belgian Congo, which became the Democratic Republic of Congo, and was brought back from Africa by a friend of my uncle in the twenties/thirties (20th century).
Since then it was stored in a clean room, protected from dust, humidity and direct sunlight.
The environment was entirely non-smoking.

It is guaranteed that this is antique ivory, crafted before 1947 and, thus, complies with the requirements of CITES regulations.
The aforementioned CITES certificate signed June 15th 2017 will be delivered with the tusk.

History:
Since 1700, ivory tusks under the name of “olifants” were carved, including complex details and became very appreciated trophies, seized during battles and wars. It was considered as dishonourable to drop the tusk during a combat.
These objects belonged to leaders and chiefs and were meticulously carved in relief with scenes of hunting and with animal battles.

These iconographic scenes enable us to determine if the carvings were intended for local use or for exportation.
This tusk only represents tribal representations of everyday life, hunting and wars, therefore, it seems not to have been crafted for a touristic purpose.

The lot will be carefully packed and sent by insured mail with track and trace.

Bidders need to be aware that several countries do not allow importing objects derived from endangered and other protected species, even if a certificate of origin is provided. By bidding, you confirm that you have familiarised yourself with customs laws and regulations of your own country.
