Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, November 22, 1881 - Hilversum, November 26, 1941) was a Dutch painter and book-cover designer. It was from his father Willem Gestel, director of the Woerdense Avondteekenschool, that he received his first drawing lessons. He also received lessons from Dimming Gestel [1], an uncle from Eindhoven. Leo Gestel then went to the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijs (drawing courses) in Amsterdam and took evening classes at the State Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1904 Leo started as an artist in an attic on the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam even-though his father did not approve of the uncertain prospects of an artist. This attic was quickly known as the Jan Steen attic, where Amsterdam artists and art lovers would meet.
Gestels’ friends called him Leendert Leonardo, after Leonardo da Vinci, abbreviated to Leo. Gestel continued to use this name all his life. Leo Gestel developed a Luminist style, which he used for painting landscapes in the Woerden area. Later, he used a more Cubist style and in the end a lot of the expressionist style. He was also influenced by Fauvism. Gestel also drew comic scenes and caricatures. He sent many postcards with funny drawings. He had a leading role in awkward or bizarre situations, for example during a move. Usually Gestel spent the summers in the North-Holland Bergen, (see Bergense School), where he finally settled at the Buerweg 4 in 1921 in a house designed by his friend L. Streefkerk, which still exists. Also he swapped his house, which happened more often among Bergen artists, with a fellow artist Constant Permeke in Sint-Martens-Latem, a similar village as Bergen N.H., near Ghent in Belgium.
