Copper, optical glass. Maritime edition. In very good condition. (Ca. 4.4 kg) Is also practical in use, collector’s item and/or even a decorative piece.
Large (long) Captain's spyglass, probably also in use by the highest ranks (Admiral), such as they were used as personal property by sailors at the early 20th century. Ca. 1890-1920.
The special thing about this spyglass is the way that the subject is brought closer and the adjustable stability.
a.) At the side of the dioptre is the rotating focus ring (indication on photo 4/7) with which you can slide the lens forward or backward to be able to better study the subject. In the development phase of this type, it so happens that other possibilities had not been invented or applied yet. Photo 2 and 8 show shadow play because of direct sunlight.
b.) The collapsible copper footrest which can significantly increase and decrease the stability through ingenious techniques.
Dimensions: total collapsed approx. 70 cm. Extended: approx. 76 cm. weight approx. 4.4 kg. Year of construction is not exactly known. Material: heavy copper (brass?) and optical lenses. Front lens can be covered with another heavy copper cap, without screw thread.
At that time, as there were very few telescopes with 2 lenses, this would have been used as a CAPTAIN’S or ADMIRAL’S spyglass.
Was built for life and works as it should. In original very good condition. Has not been polished or whatsoever. A special item.
