Rocket plane 1970s: three original NASA pictures
In the 1970s, NASA tested rocket planes as a forerunner of the space shuttle that would appear in the 1980s. An artistic impression (submitted by producer Martin Marietta) shows the X-24A flying at an altitude of 30 km at a speed of Mach 2 (2400 kilometres per hour). Two other pictures of Martin Marietta and NASA show the missile plane where the X-24 is brought before the start of a test flight by a B-52 to 15km high and then released to launch its missiles
