The Ministry of State Security (MfS), also known as the State Security Service (Stasi), was at the same time intelligence and secret police in the GDR and acted as the power instrument of the SED. Formally it was within the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic a ministry of the armed organs. The GDR's foreign secret service, the Main Administration of Intelligence (HVA), was one of about twenty of the MfS's main administrations.
The MfS was founded on February 8, 1950 and developed into a widely diversified, high-capacity monitoring and repressive apparatus, which in 1989 belonged to about 91,000 full-time employees and about 190,000 unofficial employees (IM). The latter were recruited from all the population circles, partly by means of pressure, as an informer. The MfS had the protection function of state institutions and persons. People from the GDR were targeted by the GDR population when there was a suspicion of political resistance against the SED, espionage or republican curses. Methodically, the MfS used observation, intimidation, imprisonment, as well as the so-called decomposition against oppositional and regime critics ("hostile-negative persons") as a means. In the 1950s, physical torture was still used in Stasi prisons, and later worked with elaborate psychological methods. In the 1980s, the Stasi repeatedly constituted terrorists of the Red Army Faction (RAF) in dealing with weapons and explosives.
In the course of the peaceful revolution in the autumn, the MfS was renamed to the National Security Agency (AFS) in November 1989, which ceased its activities as early as the beginning of December as a result of pressure from the citizen committees and was completely dissolved by March 1990. Since 1990, the Federal Commissioner has been responsible for the research and administration of the Federal Department of Public Security for the documents of the state security service of the former German Democratic Republic (BStU). The MfS is the only secret service in German history, which has been extensively discovered and reprocessed.
With Feliks Dzierzynski's regiment, the MfS also had its own military-operational unit, which in 1990 comprised about 11,000 men. In addition to the MfS, there was another intelligence service in the GDR, the Military Enlightenment of the National Army, headquartered in Berlin-Köpenick. These, like the frontier groups and the remaining NPAs, were controlled by the MfS (Military Intelligence Service or Administration 2000) of the MfS.
