A fine set of 8 uniform books on Japan, Japanese culture, history, people, rulers and dynasties, the landscapes, military activities, art, trade and commerce, etc., etc. The bindings and dust jackets (all present and in very good condition) are lovely, protected by see-through hard plastic sleeves.
The author is Captain F. Brinkley, who visited Japan many times and stayed there for long periods.
All published simultaneously in Boston and Tokyo, by the J. B. Millet Company, 1910. Hardback, 24 x 16 cm.
All volumes have six tissue guarded plates, including a frontispiece in full colour. For a total of 48 fine plates.
Francis Brinkley (30 December 1841 - 12 October 1912 was an Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar who resided in Meiji period Japan for over 40 years, where he was the author of numerous books on Japanese culture, art and architecture, and an English-Japanese Dictionary. He was also known as Frank Brinkley or as Captain Francis Brinkley, and was the great uncle of Cyril Connolly (Wikipedia)
The complete set consists of volume 1, 260 pages, and an additional a large, full colour folding map of Asia. Vol. 2, 286 pp. Vol. 3, 256 pp.; Vol. 4, 268 pp. Vol. 5, 260 pp. Vol. 6 301 pp. with a "War Appendix" (not counted in numbered text pages) and Index. Vol. 7. 256 pp., and Vol. 8. 480 pp. with an Appendix, and an Index to all volumes.
In total there are more than two-thousand pages.
Spines a bit sunned; former private owner's stamp on the front pastedown of all the books. Frontboard of volume V and backboard of volume VII slightly scraped. Some small remarks with pen in the text of a few volumes, but very minimal and non obtrusive. Otherwise fine, clean. A beautiful, complete, set of this rare work.
