Volume on Label: 70cl

Location history
The commune of Cherves-Richemont is near in the West of the Department of Charente, Charente-Maritime, on the right bank of the Charente River, 5 km north of Cognac.

It is formed in 1972 Association of the municipalities of Cherves Cognac and Richemont. It covers an area of 3 794 hectares.

History of the castle

The lordship of Cherves depended on Cognac and the lands of Cherves are purchased by Jacques Chesnel Governor of Cognac between 1530 and 1535. They lived then the small castle of Plumejeau, plundered in 1569, at the location where the "treasure of Cherves" was discovered.

In 1610, Charles-Roch David had built the current Castle, surrounded by a dry moat, near Plumejeau, on the area of the rock which was already a leak (Dovecote) dated 1505, included in farm buildings behind the buildings on the right looking at the Castle.

Jean Frétard (1686-1765) married to 1716 with Marie Elisabeth Chesnel (?-1759) and Louis Alexandre Frétard inherits the Castle, which later became the property of Louis Guillouet, County of D'orvilliers by alliance. Later, it is passed to the counts of Roffignac.

René-Annibal Roffignac is famous for having proposed his head instead of Louis XVI. In 1800, one of his sons, Louis-Philippe-Joseph de Roffignac, sent to Louisiana where he held the position of Mayor of New Orleans.

The count Ferdinand de Roffignac is the head of the wine estate of Castle black and founded his company in 1923; his son John and grandson Renaud then succeeded him.
