Silver (800/3rd silver grade) sculpture of Hermes on a black marble base, created after the example of a statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Bertel (in Italy: Alberto) Thorvaldsen (19 November 1770 - March 24, 1844) was a Danish / Icelandic sculptor of international fame, who spent most of his life spent in Italy (1797-1838).
The naked Hermes sitting on a tree stump, over which he has thrown some kind of cloth. His left leg supports itself while the right leg rests on the stump. His upper body is somewhat turned to the right, but his head is turned to the left. He has a sword in his right hand and is playing a pan flute, which he has in his left hand. From underneath his winged helmet some curly hair is visible.
Hermes is depicted here shortly before he goes and kills the giant Argus and is modelled after the famous sculpture of Bertel Thorvaldsen from 1818.
