Marc Chagall was born on July 7, 1887 in Liozna, near Vitebsk in Belarus (part of Russia at the time), he was naturalized French in 1937 and died on March 28, 1985 in Saint-Paul de Vence.
Chagall is one of the most famous artists of 20th century France, together with Pablo Picasso. His work features surrealism and neo-primitivism. Inspired by the Jewish tradition, Shtetl life (Jewish village in Eastern Europe) and Russian folklore, he develops his own symbolism, inspired by his life. Chagall is a major figure in art history.
