Jan Toorop (1858-1928) is considered one of the most talented Dutch artists from the period around 1900. Like Piet Mondriaan, Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, and Kees van Dongen, he has contributed immensely to the development of modern art in the Netherlands. Toorop took a drawing course at the polytechnic school in Delft (1876-1879). Subsequently, he studied at the national academy of visual arts in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885). In the Netherlands, he became the leader of the Jugendstil movement.
In 1905 he converted to Catholicism, after which he almost exclusively did religious subjects and portraits painted in his 'linear idealism', a religious-oriented Art-Nouveau style, with which he focused on the direction of symbolism with its refined style, and its technical virtuosity.
Jan TOOROP drew his prophetic work “Dorst naar rechtvaardigheid” on the eve of the twentieth century, which would become the century of the workers, the fourth class.
In terms of plastic conception he is still entangled in the Jugendstil in 1899; However, this is no longer felt in this drawing with social impact because the work is already very different from most other drawings of that year, which are still filled with the by Henry van de Velde then so beloved lines, which for obvious reasons were called vermicelli-style. To the spirit Toorop in works such as “Dorst naar rechtvaardigheid” is a pioneer of expressionism, not only because he looses more and more of the thin symbolism but mainly because for him the form or the human pathetic become more and more essential.
Jan TOOROP drew his prophetic work “Dorst naar rechtvaardigheid” on the eve of the twentieth century, which would become the century of the workers, the fourth class. At that time it is already twenty years ago that Vincent van Gogh drew his gloomy scenes of the hopeless life of the miners. But now an unstoppable enthusiasm and sure hope for a better life go through all of Europe. Also the Netherlands are shaken by it.
