It's a "gifty"-looking book, a 12-square volume housed inside a folded custom slipcase -- and inside is a series of intricate Chinese paper cuts; each one a depiction of one of the well-known performance masks from the Operas. (The Monkey King, etc)
The actual delicate paper cuts were slipped behind the acetate on each page. Simple-but-informative text accompanies each mask.
This set of papercuts are 16 pieces,that is to say,there are 16 different pictures in 1 set.the size is 21x29 cm.their pattern and colour are unique and very bright. Each piece is once cover by protected plastic folder.
With a history of more than 200 years, Yuxian paper-cutting, with its unique skills and rich cultural connotations, was named and included in China's first list of State-level intangible cultural heritage. In 2009, UNESCO put it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Rather than using scissors to create detailed images and patterns, Yuxian craftsmen carve into the paper with a thin, sharp knife, which can finely slice the paper and allow the artist to focus on small details. This gives the image an essence of realism.
It was Ming Jia who introduced innovative methods to make the color transitions of the paper-cut more smooth and natural. This work is a part of his series of 100 Chinese opera masks, which have now become the representative image of Yuxian paper-cuts today.
