Antique copper shield clip, Dhal or Gatka with a rare Mughal image.
It is a wrist-hand shield clip (buckler) with a convex shape.
This is decorated by a Trimutii in relief, Vishnu holding a rapier, enclosed by two Brahma, Shiva and Nandi (animal). At the top by a cobra and two birds.
It was attached to the hand by a hoop and two rings at the back (to hold the shield), with a leather rope.
This type of small wrist-hand shields were used by warriors in battle, during the 16th/17th century. So the small shield was held in the left hand and the sword was held in the right hand.
Size: 22 cm x 20 cm. Weight: 698 grams. India, 16th/17th century. Polished by touch.
