DRC, Congo- Early 20th century - Good condition-Provenance Jan Kusters
Collected in the 1950's, this Kuba-Kete Helmet Mask is quite impressive.
Provenance ex-collection Jan Kusters, Netherland.
H= 43 cm and 65 cm with the feathers, 70 cm on it's stand.
Wood, black bird feathers, cowries, raffia, cupper , black, white, and ocre tokula pigments, red, blue, white, yellow beads, cowries, white horse hair.
Kuba, the hollow form has pierced slit eyes, stylized facial features with traces of red, black, and white geometric designs, fiber head covered with feathers ,beads, cowries, . Some cowries string with cupper plates on the back ( see pictures)
The first exhibition with Kuba material was in 1910 in the British Museum with objects coming from the hungarian ethnologist Emil Torday.
