Dutch genre painting from the seventeenth century often contained hidden messages. these massages we immediately understood by contemporary beholders. The back gammon game was know in Holland as "Het Verkeersspel" in the sense of "Het kan verkeren"
It conveyed the message that luck for the players and in life could change in an instant. Further wee see smokers, a drinker lacking temperance (as one of the seven virtues).
The panel is 35 x 26.5 cm while the frame is 50 x 41.5 cm. The frame is a more recent version of a classic dutch frame.
Very lively tavern scene with backgammon players and in the right background two men warm themselves by a fire.
