Antique late 18th Century nuns skull/Jesus rosary Memento Mori bead.
The rosary has 60 handcarved wooden beads,6 beads are large,54 beads are smaller.
The little original skull/Jesus were placed on a nuns rosary as an ever present,reminder of their own mortality and used to focus when a nun was in silent praing or meditating.
French carved Janus head rosary bead,depicting the head of Christ and a Memento Mori human skull (18th Century France)
There is no doubt that these objects were made to be contemplated.
The rosary bead shows the face of Christ the Redeemer is wearing the Crown of Thorns and is confronted with the face of death,a symbolic reminder of the incarnation and of the passion.
This Janus head was the terminal bead and was probably late 18th Century.
