1930's, very good condition
MMB Extra Quality Lincoln Bennett & Co, Sackville Street Piccadilly, LONDON, silk plush top hat, lined with leather and silk . On a side embossed By Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty the King. Lincoln, Bennett & Co Ltd hat manufacturers were established in 1863. Napped, silk shag (hatter’s plush) as “imitation of beaver” was invented in 1793 developed as a substitute for beaver felt, which had fallen into short supply. Silk plush was in common use by hat manufacturer's after this date. Several crowned heads followed King Edward VII to Herbert Johnson, including the last Czar of all the Russias and the last Kaiser used top hats. The best hats are marked inside “Extra Quality”.
No size label, the most of "Extra Quality" top hats like this one were made to fit a customer's head. To make a hard hat, a wooden block was made to replicate the customer’s head and the shell of the hat is made over this by putting linen fabric (called goss) over the block. The goss will have been covered in the liquid shellac (called coodle) and left for several months to cure. After curing, the hat is shaped, trimmed and finished.
The hat measured circumference of the inner edge is 57, inner size 20 x 16cm. No signs of wear visible to the top, some discolouration in the inner side, in overall in a very good condition.
