Some background information on the Mai Wata:
Stories about encounters with the Mami Wata are widespread throughout Africa. In the most common version she is scouring the shores of the ocean to kidnap men and women while they are swimming or travel in a boat. If the deity considers the prisoner worthy of her attention, she will return them to the coast, completely dry and with a different attitude towards spirituality and religion that can make them rich, attractive and famous.
Her delegates throughout Africa and diaspora offer her wealth, expensive food and celebrate her in the dance-and music rituals bringing them in a trance-like state. In such events, it is assumed that Mami Wata can possess the dancers and talk with them, so that they can confuse the successful, healthy and fruitful life.
