In fair condition (restoration recommended)
A gorgeous and antique all round sculpture made of polychrome and pure gold, depicting Saint Christopher with Jesus Child on his shoulders. The patron of travellers comes from a family of Marseillaise ship owners and dates back to 1700. The Golden Legend describes him as a grumpy man who worked as a ferryman on the banks of the river, one night a Child appeared and asked to be taken to the other side of the river. This was a real endeavour and once reached the other side, the Child unveiled himself as the Christ and revealed that the beyond his weight, the man had carried the weight of the whole world. Christopher immediately converted and began to preach to the world. The sculpture still has traces of the old polychrome with unstable detachments. You can still see, in the folds of the mantle, a beautiful golden colour. Pictures are an integral part of the lot description. Shipping with insured parcel. Dimensions: 49 cm.
