William Roscoe, born in 1753 in Liverpool and died in the same city in 1832 was a banker, writer, historian, and botanist. He was a pioneer in his country in the study of Italian culture, particularly by translating the works of Luigi Tansillo. In 1802 he founded the Botanical Garden of his city. Among his main works remind: "Thoughts on the causes of the present failures" (1793), ''The life and pontificate of Leo the tenth" (1805), "Observations on penal jurisprudence and the reformation of criminal" (1819), ''Monandrian plants of the order Scitaminae chiefly drawn in the botanic garden at Liverpool" (1824-1828).
