Mechanical - 8-day movement - full and half hour bell striking and repetitive strike
Very beautiful polychrome painted floral Comtoise with 8-day anchor movement and repetition strike, dating from around 1870. Feuille, cadran, pointers and floral sling are of a later period. Which is also referred to as a 'marriage'.
The name 'Comtoise clock' is derived from the geographical concept of Franche Comté (free county), an area that contains the French departments of Jura, Doubs, Haute Saône and the Belfort region.
Instead of comtoise, the name Morbier (after the place in the Jura region, where, according to tradition, the first clock of this kind was made by a blacksmith named Mayet) or Morez is used, after a small French town near Morbier, just 20 km from the Swiss border, which became a transshipment point of the successful clock maker. And since Franche-Comté overlapped the former Duchy of Burgundy in the east, these clocks are also called Burgundy clocks.
