In this book, Jules Verne resumed his favourite themes: struggle for survival in an extreme environment, mutual assistance, scientific expedition. The author inspired himself on an expedition to observe a solar eclipse in Labrador in 1860

The story tells the story of officers to go build a fort above the Polar circle, in the Canadian Great North. The fort is established on the Cape Bathurst, which is not made of Earth, but ice. During a volcanic eruption, the cape comes loose and takes everyone with it. This is getting even worse when, in the spring, the ice begins to melt
