The KOTA people are mainly established in the East of Gabon and in the West of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The KOTA are renowned for their reliquary guardian figurines covered with metal.
For this people, the worship of the ancestors (Bwiti or Bwete) was central in their system of belief and in their rites. They consecrated a specific devotion to the relics of their ancetors.
The skulls and the bones were stored and venerated in baskets made of tree bark which were topped by carved figurines, called the KOTA reliquaries. Each clan owned a reliquary which was kept in the back of the chief’s hut.
