Views in India, China and on the shores of the Red Sea; drawn by Prout, Stanfield, Cattermole, Purser, Cox, Austen, &c. from original sketches by Commander Robert Elliott, R. N. With descriptions by Emma Roberts. Volumes I-II. [Complete].
London, H. Fisher, R. Fischer & P. Jackson, 1835. In two volumes. 4to (27.0 x 21.3 cm). 132 pages. [I: 68; II: 1-64]. One engraved, pictorial title page, one full colour woodblock engraving "printed in oil- colours" by G. Baxter as a frontispiece, one engraved portrait and 61 engraved plates. In total 64 engraved plates [complete]. Contemporary uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines with gilt title and ornaments (rebacked), later plain endpapers.
A very nicely illustrated work, mostly with views from India, but also other places in the "East", such as CHINA. The text is very informative. Little is known about Elliott, other than being a naval officer and topographical draughtsman. Emma Roberts (1794-1840) "often referred to as Miss Emma Roberts', was an English travel writer and poet known for her memoirs about India. In her own time, she was well regarded, and William Jerdan considered her "a very successful cultivator of the belles lettres"" (Wikipedia). The printers acted as publishers. As usual rather foxed, and several plates have a waterstain in a corner and the lower part of the plates, just touching the imprint in a few. Both volumes professionally rebacked, missing parts of original spine. Overall still a reasonably good copy.
