Maximilian Schaefer, Tierformen. Vergleichende Studien über die Anatomie des Menschen und der Tiere für Künstler, Kunst-Handwerker sowie Dilettanten bearbeitet.
Dresden, Wolfgang Jess [or Gerhard Kühtmann], 1899. Two parts in two [text and atlas]. Folio (34.3 x 26.3 cm). vi, 94 pages., 98 text illustrations; 64 mostly anatomical plates. Original uniform quarter cloth over printed boards. Printed title on the spines. Top edges red.
Rather rare and very instructive atlas for animal-artists and anyone else interested in the anatomy and physionomy of the vertebrates (excluding fishes). The work shows the skeletons, muscles and skin or feathers of various animals in great anatomical detail. Included are Man, other mammals (principally lions, horses, dogs, but also many others), reptiles (crocodiles, etc.) are well represented, as are birds. Several plates have explanatory leaves or have captions with the names of bones, muscles, etc. Oddly, the front boards and title pages list different publishers. Boards of the atlas a bit rubbed, the spine reinforced with paper, partly obscuring the title, some light spotting to a few leaves, otherwise a very good, clean and complete copy.
