Publication year: 2002
Author: Wang Qingzheng
Book Title: A Dictionary of Chinese Ceramics
Number of Books: 1

This volume, the first ever attempted in such a format in the English language in 2002, is aimed at the collector, connoisseur and curator. Information is provided in an encyclopedic format to serve a comprehensive range of enquiries, that have been carefully researched and written by world-renowned author, Professor Wang Qingzheng and his team of experts in the ceramics department of the Shanghai Museum. Though not a strict taxonomic study, this book is intended to address a vast number of enquiries into the artistic, stylistic, technical and historical aspects of Chinese ceramics. Seven chapters: Shapes and Forms; Ceramics Materials and Manufacture; Kiln Sites, Factories, Guilds and Wares; Decoration Methods, Glazes and Colors; Motifs; Marks and Inscriptions; Potters, Books and Studies on Ceramics containing more than 2,500 entries, more than 1,000 color and black and white illustrations, and is supported by maps and dynamic and time chronologies. Selected line drawings provide a graphic analysis of shapes and decorative styles occurring throughout China's history of ceramic production. Entries are grouped into themes such as shapes and forms; ceramic materials and manufacture; decoration methods, glazes, and colors; and marks and inscriptions. Each entry is accompanied by references in Pinyin (phonetic Romanized Chinese) as well as Chinese characters for further verification.Comprehensive indices in English will assist the reader in searching for desired entries. Owing to the complexity and conflicts arising in direct translations an from the Chinese language, an alphabetical order is implemented wherever possible in each chapter and/or sections or groups of topics within them, in general accordancewith Western dictionary conventions. Information is rendered instantly accessible through four indices-English, Pinyin, Chinese Classical literature, and museum illustrations.
