2nd half of the 20th century - Good condition
The MARKA are an ethnic group very close to the BAMBARA, whose art is also characterised by masks covered with brass sheets, just like this one.
For the MARKA, Do is the spirit to which the mask gives shape and constitutes its expression.
Do comes from the Savannah, through the mask with leaves, and in certain mythical cases, through head masks carved in wood and provided with fibres.
Within the religious system of the MARKA society, Do is the most invoked spirit and his cult is the most elaborate one.
The MARKA are organised in structured and hierarchical societies of masks.
There is an initiatory language, a means of communication spoken by the initiates.
