Good condition, intact, high quality craftsmanship

Spectacular pair of pine wood carvings, depicting two Saints, namely Saint Peter and Saint Paul, fully crafted, sculpted and painted by hand. From a private chapel in the Trento area, Italy, and dating back to the 18th century. Magnificent polychromy, still present and bright, still with their original nails.
The couple used to be hung on a church wall, they can be hung on a wall or placed on a shelf.
Two unique objects both for their small size and, above all, for their state of preservation, primarily in consideration of their age.
Polychromy was retouched a few years ago to make it brighter; keys, sword and hands have been probably replaced over the years.
Please note the remarkable care and precision of details, the amazing expression of faces and the skill in carving them from a single wooden block. No gluing nor sticking, which increases its value and quality.
Hight craftsmanship and historical quality.

Saint Paul is represented with the sword, as he was killed by it, which was considered a noble way to die. He was a Roman citizen. The sword symbolizes her martyrdom. However, the sword is given another meaning: Saint Paul is known as the ‘Apostle to the nations’, as he was the first to understand that Christ's message was intended for the whole world, not only for the Jews, and he brought this message everywhere. The sword is an instrument of conquest. Saint Paul’s sword, which allowed him to conquer the world, was his word, his eloquence.
Saint Peter, instead, is depicted with a big wrench in his hand, his portrayal is derived from the words that Jesus said to him:
‘You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven, and whatever you’ll bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven’.

Both sculptures are in good overall condition, with usual wear from ageing.
In case of shipping, they will be sent after proper and careful packaging.

Dimensions (each):
- height 33 cm,
- width 21 cm,
- depth 10 cm.
Weight 0.6 kg.
