Excellent state of preservation
Imposing sculpture crafted with the repoussé (pressed) technique, depicting the irate Mahākāla figure in its white six-armed manifestation (Shadbhuja), standing 'samapafa' posture on base made of a single lotus flower. The figure wears a bejewelled 'dothi' and originally held an attribute in each hand: in the primary two a 'kapala' and a jewel; a 'kartica', a 'dhvaja' standard, a 'parasu' axe and a 'khatvanga' trident shaped baton in the secondary hands. Of all those listed, only the jewel is still in its place. Some coveal stones, including emeralds and rubies, are set on its feet, wrists and earrings. The face has an irate expression. It is entirely painted with the original dyes, with traces of a beard, a large third eye, flames pouring out of the mouth and a flaming hair with at its centre a diadem in emerald root. It is possible to see stained glass and precious stones on its ankles, wrists and jewels, including presumably coeval ruby roots and corals. Cast metal hands and feet. Himalayan Art.
