Permian (295 mil y - 290 mil y) - Odernheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
Fossil plate with two handsomely preserved Branchiosaurus-specimens of the species Apateon pedestris, with beautiful retention of both skin and teeth.
Apateon pedestris was a type of small primitive amphibian with a maximal length at maturity of 15 cm. Their round body scales and external gills are frequently preserved in their fossils. Contrary to other amphibians, A. pedestris did not experience a metamorphosis, but remained in a larval stadium for its entire life, even when reaching sexual maturity. As a consequence they spent their entire existence in the water.
