Mid 19th century oval watercolour of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, 1844-1900. Attributed to Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1805-1873. On back of painting is written, "given to EMB by Princess Louise (of Belgium)". Presented in black ebonised oval frame.
Alfred (Alfred Ernest Albert; 6 August 1844 – 30 July 1900), reigned as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 1893 to 1900. He was the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was known as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866 until he succeeded his paternal uncle Ernest II as the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (20 April 1805 – 8 July 1873) was a German painter and lithographer, known for his portraits of royalty in the mid-nineteenth century. His name has become associated with fashionable court portraiture.
The painting measures 19 x 15 cm. The frame measures 28 x 24 cm.
The painting is in fairly good condition. Please look at all images for accurate condition. Frame has old damage. Ready to hang.
