2nd half of the 20th century - Good condition
Powerful mask from the LWALWA tribe from D.R.Congo.
The Lwalwa live in the Western Kasai region. The Lwalwa Mask represents the Supreme being Mvidie Mukulu and Nzambi, the first Creator who knows all things. Lwalwa art is best known for their powerful, very Cubist masks with perfect proportions and elegant lines. The nose looks like the beak of the calao bird.
Lwalwa masks are styled with simple geometric shapes. The eyes of the mask are rectangular holes and the nose is a long flat triangle that often extends to the top of the head.
They are cut from a forest called ' Mulela ' and coloured with a dye from the fruit of the ' Mukula ' tree, also called ' blood wood ' or ' sealing-wax ' tree.
Lwalwa sculptors are privileged members of the tribe and highly paid for their craft. Their skills are often passed on from father to son.
