Thailand, Lop Buri, +- 2000 years old

A dyed petrified palm wood - Pumtek - bead with 4 stripes from Lop Buri, Thailand,+- 2000 years old. Its colour is natural. No traces of dying at a later date. The holes are ancient, handmade, irregular, funnel-shaped. Ancient patina.It has been cleaned from the centuries deposits and now its surface is smooth. In good condition.+- similar pieces are published in the book: Bunchar Pangpanich : Beads of Lop Buri , pp .46,47

Acquired by Dr. Zelnik, mid 90's in Bangkok from the collection of a Thai University professor.

Pyu Culture:
The Tibeto-Burman speaking Pyu people migrated in approx. the 8th Century from China into Burma and are the county’s earliest recorded inhabitants.
Most of pre-Pyu Culture flourished around the Samon Valley in central Myanmar.
They established the Pyu kingdom which remained powerful and influential for a millennium.
The kingdom established important trade ties with the Chinese and Indians from whom they adopted some practices such as Buddhism.
