French Modernist Design
Maria Pergay works are in collections and museums worldwide.

Maria Pergay is a significant modernist designer of the 20th century, and has created a wide variety of accessories and furniture since the 1950s. Born in Moldavia in 1930, her family escaped to Paris in 1937 due to WWII. She studied sculpture under Ossip Zadkine and was a member of IDHEC where she studied costume and set design. As a window designer for fashion houses, she began to create her own objects to complement the fashions. She eventually opened her own store in Paris, focused on metalwork, and was one of the first designers to utilize stainless steel in her objects and furniture. Today she is recognized for her sleek, elegant, and often whimsical designs, and any works by her are highly desirable. She has exhibited in galleries in Paris and New York, and her works are in collections and museums worldwide.
