THE MONKEY'S RAINCOAT
At the first drizzle / even the monkey seems to want / a small straw coat. Illustration by Tanaka Suiko, verses of Matsuo Basho.
Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694) is probably the greatest Japanese master of haiku poetry. Born in the military class and subsequently ordered monk in a zen monastery, he became a famous poet with his own school and students, over time, increasingly numerous. Tireless traveler often describes his travel experience in his work. His aesthetics coincides with the zen's dictates with a new sensibility that characterizes evolving society: from the search for emptiness, to skinny simplicity, to the representation of nature, to essential but vivid portraits of everyday and popular life.
I bought negi / and came home / through bare trees. Illustration by Tanaka Suiko, verses of Yosa Buson.
The Japanese poet and painter Yosa Buson (1716 - 1784) is considered one of the representative poets of haiku. His compositions take on traditional ideas already debated, introducing new ones as well. Every poem is influenced by his personality, which is totally immersed in the evocative atmosphere. Experienced leader of lyrical expression, Yosa Buson is sometimes a little mannered.
MY DWELLING PLACE
Is this then my last dwelling place? Five foot of snow... Illustration by Tanaka Suiko, words written by the poet Issa Kobayashi when, forced by indigence, returned to Kashiwabara, the village where he was born.
Issa Kobayashi (1763 - 1828) is one of the most appreciated and well-known poets of haiku. He wrote more than 20,000 poems, introspective and descriptive, still very famous today. Despite this success, he always had many economic problems. His style, however, notwithstanding his many personal problems, always maintained a childish simplicity, with a rather free use of colloquial phrases and dialectical terms.
