Late Period, ca 664 - 332 BC- Egypt

This green, blue, white red, yellow and black painted cartonnage panel from the trappings of a mummy is primarily in two registers and decorated with the deities associated with death and the afterlife. The top panel depicts, on a green background, a winged scarab, an image that relates to rebirth symbolism. The scarab likely represents Khepri, a manifestation of the sun-god specifically at rising (i.e. resurrection) on the morning horizon. In the lower register is the kneeling figure of the sky goddess Nut, facing left and with a large solar disc on her head, her wings outstretched and holding a feather and flail in each hand. Both registers are flanked by the four standing sons of Horus (Duamutef, Imsety, Hapi and Qebsenuef), gods who protected the vital organs of the body after mummification. polychrome.

Condition: Aside from a few small cracks and losses the panel is intact and in excellent condition overall. Presented in superb museum quality custom mount.

Provenance: Family Collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1960's and then by descent, legally imported into the USA in 2016.

Material: Linen, gesso, polychrome
No export licenses required however this piece may be subject to reduced import tax/duties.
Shipping method: Fedex (including insurance).
