A red glazed pottery dish with a gently sloping floor and overhanging rim and a concave tondo, the red glaze with blackish overtones to one area both front and back and near the center. This type of plate was used specifically for eating fish and shellfish as suggested by the many sea-life depictions found on vessels of a similar form.

Dimensions: Diameter: 5.5 inches (14 cm)

Condition: Loss to the rim and minor chips, glaze worn, otherwise intact and in good condition overall.

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, and then by descent. Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology. He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey in the late 1960's with the US government and during this time acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region.
