2013 saw warm and dry conditions throughout most of growing season, but without any significant periods of severe heat.
Yields were low and many red varieties ripened evenly, with great flavor, depth and some firm prominent tannins which have softened well during maturation. As a result, many of the wines from the year show great structure and framing when young and look to have the ability to genuinely age well too.
Deep, dark ruby.
Full, soft and layered with aromas of vibrant blackberries and blood plum fruit. These are coupled with secondary more subtle hints of cedar wood, fresh vanilla bean, pan forte and clove spice.
Intense primary fresh plum flavours show again on the palate, where they hold their presence all the way through to roll out soft and “pillowy” at the finish. A firmly present, but fine tannin framework provides just enough focus and lift for the fruit to ensure added complexity, but retaining vibrancy to the mouth flavours of this wine.
Every so often there are parcels of wine that generate tremendous excitement amongst the winemakers at Schild Estate. We set this aside to make PRÄMIE, the wine that defines the best of the vintage and the land on which it was grown.
Shiraz fruit was selected from two special sites, our Liebich and Angus Brae blocks high up on the Eastern Hills. Meticulously handled to allow the vineyard to reach its fullest expression in the glass, pure lifted blue and black berries with hints of graphite and clove give way to a rich, dynamic palate showing great control. Finesse and length.
Each vintage, certain parcels emerge as the stars. This wine came about by a desire from our winemaking team to showcase the most exciting parcels of the year in an individual wine designed to reflect the most premium parcel of fruit from that particular vintage. In light of this we have drawn from our German heritage and used the word “Prämie” (pronounced prim – ee – er”). This means “premium” or “reward” in the German language. Whilst there are of course proven performers year on year, it is by no means always the same blocks that respond to the different vintage conditions and emerge on top. As such, it can be a lovely surprise to see which wines shine from the depths of the barrel cellar as our favorites.
