Full-page incunable woodcut

Technique: Woodcut
Period: 16th century
Condition: In very good condition
Title of artwork: De historie van Anna en Joachim
Signature: Not signed
Artist: Meester van Delft

Wood engraving of 18 x 21.5 cm.
Page: 27 x 18 cm.

De rechte physiognomie / figuere / oft de gedaente ons liefs heeren Jesu Chrisrti, ghelijck als hij wandelde op Aertrijck.

Good print
Dutch text underneath the image and on the back.

The wood engraving is from Ludolphus de Saxonia, ‘Dit es dleué ons liefs heeren ihesu christi’. Anonymous Dutch translation. Published in 1503 or later.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, that has a version of this print (Salvator Mundi) in its collection (Object RP-P-OB-1999) dates the print at 1480-1500 and/or 1503. The wood engraving in this auction is possibly from one of the later editions as the pinnacles of the edge decoration have sometimes been replaced by a type of arabesques.

Incunable made shortly after the invention of book printing. The first publication was in 1488. Wood engravings were possibly already used in earlier Dutch works. Some wood engravings are known to have been first used in Gouda, The Netherlands and later also in Antwerp, by both Gheraert and Claes Leeu, in 1487 and 1488 respectively.
