In good overall condition, excellent workmanship
Magnificent pine wood sculpture depicting the Archangel Michael and Lucifer, crafted and painted by hand. The work captures the moment when the Saint stabs with his sword the demon Lucifer, with the intent to drive him out from the Kingdom of Heaven. Pictures of the Archangel Michael driving the devil away are allegorical. The angels are trying to oppose to his work in the world.
Lucifer would have been the most important of the angels, but he didn't want to depend on God and that is why the Hell was born. In order to give him what he wanted, God had his creature cast out from his realm and granted him to become the God of his own Kingdom, that is Hell.
The work comes from a private collection in Florence, and dates back to the late 18th century.
Please note the attention to details (the incredible fineness of face, hands and wings); the majesty of the artwork conveys strength and brightness.
Polychromy was retouched a few years ago to liven up the look, it has several layers of polychromy and latest overlaps.
Of outstanding high-quality craftsmanship, quite a unique lot.
It would benefit from a slight restoration to fingers, which is easy and fast; moreover, wings can be removed to facilitate transport. In fact, the sword should be placed in his hand but, in consideration of a possible restoration, it lays on the base.
Overall, a magnificent work, a classic representation of good overcoming evil. Colours are very vivid. Spectacular nuances of colour on the wings.
In good overall condition, perfectly intact.
It will be shipped in wooden case, with proper packaging ensuring its safe transportation.
Safe shipping throughout Europe and the rest of the world, at competitive and reasonable prices.
