Moko drums can be traced to the Dong Son culture of Vietnam in the mid 1st century B.C.

Bronze drums could be found on the trading routes from Sumatra to New Guinea.

They are now primarily to be found on the island of Alor, where, in our modern times, they are seen as a high-value and prestigious bride price.

In earlier times, they were a form of payment. The production and uncontrolled circulation of the 19th century came to a halt in 1914 under the Dutch colonial government. Ca. 1,600 of these were confiscated and destroyed.

On the small, insignificant island of Alor, several of these avoided destruction and survived by being hidden;  mostly buried in the earth.
