Cham Kingoms, 10th-12th century - Vietnam

An exceptional, unique gold diadem from the Cham Kingdoms.
Material: gold
Date: 10th-12th century
Origine: Vietnam
Condition:The diadem is in a very good state of preservation,with deposit of red soil on both sides.
Size: H: 76 mm , W : 155 mm , 36,2 gr.
Shipping as registered mail-pack with insurance.

This repoussé diadem is bent and are two oblong holes,vertically cut,on either side for fixing it to the hair por to a sculpture.
The central image is a fromntally portrayed head of a dvarapala or a male guradian deity.
He has a broad face with strongly marked features including a flat nose and wide nostrils,prominent eyes and a thick upper lip.
The beard and the mustache are neatly trimmed,the line of the eyebrowa wnds in fine reversed curves in the middle.
The diadem only suggested by a floral motif above the forhead and completed with a spiral design on the upper earlobes.
Other ornaments are flora earrings and bead choker.The centrtal figure is flanked by two dancers wearing skirts with triangular front drape and hair piled up above beaded diadems.Around the figures are foliate motifs:wave-like tendrils,springs and spirals.
The image of this diadem ahs a strong stylistic affinities to Thap Mam style / Binh Dinh / style stone dvarapala figures dated to the 12-14th century.
Other details indicate an earlier date ,Tra Kieu style , 10-11th century.

Provenance:
From the collection of the last vietnamese emperor's / bao Dai / family.Acquisition by Dr.Zelnik end of the 80's in Paris.
The piece is published in the book " Gold Treasures of the Cham kingdoms fromt the Collection of Dr.Zelnik" pp.38,39. and in the grand album "The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum" pp . 110,113
