In good condition with slight signs of wear
Leather travel bag with extensive nécessaire for men from circa 1900 by Gustave Keller. The Gustave Keller company was founded in 1856 as a producer of various very high-quality accessories. The company won several awards including at the Paris World Exhibition. Because of the high-quality, Keller became the preferred supplier of the courts, including those in Spain, Greece, Romania and from 1897 the Tsar of Russia became a good customer of the company.
The offered travel bag is made at Rue Joubert no. 22 in Paris, where the company moved to in 1891.
The bag contains a large number of attributes for care products, including crystal bottles and vials with silver lid or cap. The silver is marked with the name 'G. Keller', with the silver mark of Keller and with the silver mark Minerva No. 1, which stands for silver with a purity of. 950.
The shaving accessories contain a beautiful shaving brush with silver-plated holder (which can be stored in a silver-plated cylinder), a razor, a grindstone (with ivory handle) and (ebony) beard brush.
The clothes brush and some hair brushes from ebony wood have a silver monogram, as well as the glove fastener. The (broken) shoe spoon also had a monogram, this is on the photos, but has unfortunately disappeared.
Furthermore, there is a special matchstick holder (vesta case) with striking plate and an ink jar (whose interior is probably gilded).
The content summarized:
- 4 crystal vials of varying sizes with silver (. 950) cap and all equipped with stylized monogram 'VR'.
- 3 crystal bottles of various sizes with glass stopper and silver (. 950) cap, also with stylized monogram 'VR'.
- Various brushes of black wood, with silver monogram ' VR '
- Shaving brush in silver-plated holder with monogram.
- Razor grindstone with ivory handle, with monogram 'VR'
- Matchstick holder (vesta case), probably gilded.
- Inkwell, probably gilded.
- Ebony glove fastener with silver monogram.
- Shoe spoon, broken, without monogram.
- Some loose cases and holders. Holder for mirror, mirror itself is missing
The content seems to be largely complete, the important items are certainly present. The silver caps feature engraved maker’s monograms 'VR' and marked with 'G. Keller' plus mark and with a silver mark Minerva with no. 1, which stands for content. 950.
The bag is in good condition, except for a few corners, which are worn through. Besides for the accessories, the bag also offers room for things like towels, a blanket and the like, to be fastened with fixed straps. The copper closures all work fine, the key is missing. There is another canvas exterior bag, which served as protection for the leather bag (or maybe to mask the content ..?). This protection is worn, but still usable and with the abbreviation L.F.V.
The whole thing weighs 9 kg.
