I am offering for auction a superb early 20th century oil on canvas of a shameless young woman sitting on a table in a bar smoking, while men gather around her. She shows her legs and enjoys being the centre of attention. A man on the right plays his guitar while another offers her a beer. Beind him an older woman looks on with disapproval. A large and impressive painting by listed Austrian artist Richard Geiger, 1870-1945.  Typical of his work. His paintings nearly always feature attractive young women in risque poses. This is a delightful work.

The painting measures 98 x 72.5 cm. The frame measures 120 x 96 cm.

The painting is in fairly good order. Please view all pictures for accurate condition. Some craquelure.  Some old professional repairs to canvas. Some wear to frame. Ready to hang.

Richard Geiger was born in Vienna and first studied at the Vienna Art Institute with the academic painter Christian Ludwig Von Griepenkerl and, subsequently, in Paris with Francois Flameng . From Griepenkerl, Geiger learned the rigorous application of anatomical principles, and, from Flameng, he derived his use of a saturated palette combined with a lyrical and bravura brushwork.

After 1893, Geiger lived in Budapest where he specialized in figural and genre painting. He was also an accomplished graphic artist and printmaker. Throughout a long career, Geiger exhibited with success in France, Germany and Hungary.
