Personal hand fan of the Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria (1868-1924) daughter of Elisabeth "Sisi" and Franz Joseph I of Austria.
Made of horn and silk, with carved and pierced horn sticks, the guards have steel clouté applied to them, the leaf is covered with steel sequins and spangles in various shapes inspired by the French Empire. The fan comes in a cardboard box with retail stamp: Carl Hiess Wien Graben. 11.
This fan was designed by Marie Valerie herself. She also designed the personal fan of her mother Sisi, Empress of Austria.
She commissioned the fan at Carl Hiess (Vienna, Am Graben 11).
Provenance and authenticity:
This item was acquired by the present owner together with numerous other imperial items from a great collection. It was part of the estate of the imperial family and the previous owner was a family member. The expert for items of the former Austrian Royal Family ,Dr. Ludwigstorff of the Viennese auction house Dorotheum, has examined this item.
