It is customary to refer to the icon of Kazan as an iconographic version of the Odigitria. Such icons go back to the prototype, which was kept in the Vlaherna temple in Constantinople.

The Virgin is portrayed with light, in characteristic clothes, with a slight inclination of her head towards the Babe. The infant Christ is represented strictly in full face, the figure is limited to the waist, only the right hand with a blessing (usually two-fingered) gesture is visible.

The Kazan icon of the Virgin is one of the most revered and reproduced icons, now it is in fact one of the independent iconographic types of the iconic icons in Russia.
