Renault - 4 L Export - 1963

General: It was not until 1961 that the Renault 4 was presented at the Salon de l'Automobile in Paris, in the Luxury (L) version, for which in France it was also known as the 4L. The R4 body was mounted on a chassis. The R4 had independent suspension on all four wheels, and all four were equipped with torsion bar suspensions. The wheelbase on the left side is 4 cm shorter than the wheelbase on the right side, allowing the rear torsion bar suspension to do its work with ease, without influencing the handling of the car. The driving performance of a Renault 4 is experienced as very comfortable, more comfortable than some of the modern cars. This is in part due to the smoothness of the torsion bar suspension. During the production of the R4, the model was regarded by many as a station wagon, but in retrospect, it is perhaps better to call it one of the first hatchbacks. Only in recent years, the cult status of the R4 has started to increase. In the Netherlands, the R4 was for sale until 1986. Specifics of this car: This Renault 4L dates from the early years (delivery 29-1-1963, type designation R1120). Production started in 1961! From 1963, the export version was sold having an engine capacity of 845 cc. In France, this engine was supplied at extra cost (standard was 745 cc). This car has the first generation dashboard, the chromed "harp" grille with the Renault logo still in the centre. It is the only type with fold-out side windows at the rear. The door hinges are still located on the outside, which was no longer the case with later models. Also, the narrow chromed bumper was no longer installed from 1967 onwards. Both the interior and the sheet material are original. Only the hood was once repainted which now gives a colour difference. The vehicle has on the “certificat d’immatriculation” a note reading "vehicule de collection". Next mandatory inspection before 10-05-2021. Technically, the car is fully in order. Recently fitted with a new complete exhaust. Tyres are in good condition. Roadworthy. The bodywork and paint are original but have been retouched at different places. This gives this Renault 4L Export a particularly rustic character with flair. Car is located in Ravenstein, the Netherlands.
