His great love is oil painting on linen in naturalistic tones. He completely mastered this technique. He also made plastic artworks for universities. The themes which he chooses are mainly Dutch landscapes, such as polder and river landscapes. His paintings give the right picture of a real Dutch landscape with a threat in the air or a summer day. Gien Brouwer exhibited in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Venlo, Düsseldorf,  Frankfurt and Munich. He also paints under the name Gien van de Velde.
