Good condition, see description
Two original woodblock prints by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), 1854.
- "Young Lovers": Bando Shuka I as the Geisha Oshun, and Bando Takesaburo I as Izutsuya Denbei.
From the play "Miyakodori Nagare no Shiranami".
- "Monkey Trainer": Arashi Rikan III as the Monkey Trainer (Sarumawashi) Owasa.
From the play "Hatsugasumi Onna Saruhiki".
Both plays were performed together in the Kawarazaki-theatre, with the "Miyakodori" being the main-performance, and the "Hatsugasumi" the second performance.
The two woodblock prints are designed together as a diptych, despite there was no link between the two plays, other than being performed at the same time.
Signed "Toyokuni ga" in Toshidama-shaped cartouche, on both sheets.
Dated according to aratame-date-seals: 1854, 1st month.
Published by Ogawa Hansuke.
Blockcutter's seal: Hori Shoji (Tsuge Shojiro) (on right sheet only).
In collection of MFA under number 11.29519 and 11.29518 .
Note that the prints offered here have a more delicate color-printing, the multi-color-'bokashi' in the Kimono (L) and in the back-ground (R), than the MFA-prints.
Also, note the character's names in black next to the actor's cartouches, possible added by hand.
On Japanese washi paper, in good condition. Colors in good condition. Original without backing. Vague reddish stains in face and arm of Izutsuya Denbei (L).
Size is 24.8x 36.8cm and 24.8x 36.8cm (2x oban).
I used 2 scans to cover the complete oban-sizes, pictures might show the copy/paste-lines.
Will be sent protected by acid-free paper, under heavy card-boards, fully insured.
